  • GENERAL INFORMATION

    The general eligibility requirements for visas:

    The Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka may issue visa subject to following conditions

    • Justifiable reason to visit Sri Lanka
    • A passport valid for a minimum period of six months from the date of arrival in Sri Lanka
    • Reservation of a return air passage or an onward passage to another destination or an approval from the Department of Immigration & Emigration in the case of an entry visa

    Eligibility for Visa Exemptions:

    • Sri Lankans holding dual citizenship.
    • Children whose birth have been registered under section 5 (2) of the Citizenship Act 1948 until 21 years of age

  • TOURIST VISA (TOURIST ETA)

    All Holiday makers visiting the island for;
    • Sight-seeing/relaxation
    • Excursions
    • Medical and recreational activities
    • Visiting friends or relatives
    • Spectators of sports competitions or cultural events
    must have a valid “Electronic Travel Authorization” for tourism (Tourist ETA) to enter Sri Lanka. Tourist ETAs can be obtained online by the applicant himself/herself or by a third party on his/her behalf (Eg. by a travel agent), without the intervention of this Embassy. Visitors travelling in groups have the option of applying for a group ETA. The visa fee can be paid online using a credit card.

    In the event of applying for a Tourist ETA through this embassy, following information must be furnished along with the application.

    • Duly filled ETA Tourist visa application (Click here)
    • Details of the air passage to Sri Lanka (A copy of the reservation including the final destination)
    • A copy of the bio-data page of the passport
    • Details of the places of stay in Sri Lanka (Hotel reservation/s or the local address/es of stay and contacts in Sri Lanka)
    • Contact details of the applicant’s local (Brazilian/accredited country’s) residency (Contacts nos., email & postal address)
    • Applicant should deposit the visa fee in the embassy's bank account and email the scanned bank receipt as proof of payment of the visa fee. (For details about the embassy bank account please contact ).

    Notes:

    • Once an Tourist ETA is issued it is a sufficient authority to enter Sri Lanka and there is no need to get a visa stamp on the passport.
    • A Tourist ETA can be used within six months form the date of issue to stay in Sri Lanka for a period of maximum of 30 days.
    • Facilities are available at the Colombo Bandaranaike Airport to obtain Tourist ETAs on arrival with an additional payment
    • Those who apply for ETAs through third parties must make sure that the payments are made only to ETA website to avoid double payment at the port of entry.
    • Extensions beyond 30 days for Tourist ETAs can only be obtained at the Visa & Border Control Division of the Department of Immigration & Emigration, “Suhurupaya”, Sri Subhuthipura Road, Baththramulla”.
    • Visitors who do not qualify for the ETA visa category must have an entry visa to enter Sri Lanka.
  • BUSINESS VISA (BUSINESS ETA)

    Business travellers (short stay visits for business purposes) visiting Sri Lanka for following purposes are eligible to apply for an “Electronic Travel Authorization” for business purposes (Business ETA)

    • Participants in conferences, seminars & workshops
    • Participants in art, music & dance events
    • Participants in business meeting & negotiations
    • Participants in religious events
    • Participants in symposiums
    • Participants in short term training programmes

    Business ETAs can only be obtained through this Embassy. Applicants who wish to apply for Business ETAs through this Mission should submit the following information along with the application.

    • Duly filled ETA Business visa application (Click here)
    • Details of the air passage to Sri Lanka (A copy of the reservation)
    • A copy of the bio-data page of the passport
    • Invitation letter from the Sri Lankan host party
    • Details of the place of stay in Sri Lanka (Hotel reservation or the local address of stay and contacts in Sri Lanka)
    • Details of the applicant’s local company/institution/organization (A letter from the local company/institution/organization indicating the assignment/accreditation/nomination of the applicant to participate in the event)
    • Applicant should deposit the visa fee in the Embassy's bank account and email the scanned bank receipt as proof of payment of the visa fee. (For details about the embassy bank account no. please contact ).

    • Visitors who do not qualify for the ETA category must have an "Entry Visa" to enter Sri Lanka

  • TRANSIT VISA

    A "Transit Visa" is an entry permit granted to a foreign national for admission into Sri Lanka for a brief period which is incidental and in the course of his journey to another destination.

    Please note that if the traveller is not leaving the airport, a transit visa is not required.

    Transit visa for single entry to stay in the island for a maximum of 48 hours is currently issued free of charge. If the transit time exceeds 48 hours, a processing fee will be charged at the port of entry.

    Transit ETA visas can be applied online by the applicant himself/herself via www.eta.gov.lk website or through the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Brasilia. Visitors travelling in groups have the option of applying for a Group Transit ETA.

    In the event of applying for Transit ETA through this embassy, following information must be furnished along with the application.

    • Duly filled ETA Transit visa application (Annexure III)
    • Details of the air passage to Sri Lanka (A copy of the reservation including the final destination)
    • A copy of the bio-data page of the passport
    • Details of the place of stay in Sri Lanka (Hotel reservation or the local address of stay and contacts in Sri Lanka)
    • Contact details of the applicant’s local (Brazilian/accredited country’s) residency (Contacts nos., email & postal address)
    • Scanned bank receipt of visa fee payment. (Applicant should deposit the visa fee at the embassy’s bank account and the scanned band receipt should be sent to the Embassy. For account details and sending the bank receipt please contact ).

  • DIPLOMATIC AND OFFICIAL VISA

    Applicants with Diplomatic or Official Passports or regular passport holders with diplomatic/official endorsement referring the expected visit to Sri Lanka should contact this Embassy to arrange their visas.

    Visas will be issued free of charge by the Embassy for diplomatic and official passport holders or passports with an official endorsement traveling to Sri Lanka for official purposes.

    Short stay applicants visiting the island in their official capacities for the purposes stipulated under Business ETA category should submit this Embassy the documents mentioned thereunder along with a Note verbale or Diplomatic Note from the respective Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Embassy or International Organization in place of “Details of the applicant’s local company”

    Applicants who are entering the island for long term assignments must submit the following information

    Applicants from countries eligible for on arrival visas, travelling to Sri Lanka for Employment/Assignment/to Join members of family working in Diplomatic Missions in Sri Lanka, must submit a duly filled (Annexure II) to the Immigration at the port of entry along with their diplomatic/official passport or the passports with an official endorsement.

    • Note verbale or Diplomatic Note from the respective Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Embassy or International Organization
    • Duly filled form(Annexure I)
    • Three colour photographs with light blue background in size 4.5 cm x 3.5 cm (forehead & both ears should be exposed)
    • A passport valid for a minimum period of six months from the date of arrival in Sri Lanka
    • Applicants from countries eligible for on arrival visas, travelling to Sri Lanka for employment/assignments/to Join members of family working in Diplomatic Missions in Sri Lanka, must submit a duly filled (Click here) to the Immigration at the port of entry along with their diplomatic/official passport or the passports with an official endorsement.

    Note:

    Please note that diplomatic and official passport holders traveling to Sri Lanka for other purposes must follow the applicable regular application procedure.   • JOURNALIST VISA

    Journalists/printed & electronic media personnel including television news crews (Including camera crews) visiting Sri Lanka for news reporting can apply for their visas under Business ETA category through this Embassy. Such applicants should submit following information.

    • Application for an entry visa ‘Form B’ (Click here)
    • Specimen of the Journalist attestation form (Click here) – n.b. The journalist attestation form should be printed on the letterhead of the media organization.
    • Letter of Commission: a letter from the respective media organization detailing the tentative programme with dates, places and if it contains interviews, the persons to be interviewed etc. (For freelance journalists, a letter from the editor of the publication)
    • Passport – n.b. Validity of the passport must be at least six months beyond the date of entry to Sri Lanka.
    • Three recent Colour photographs with light blue background in size 3.5 cm x 2.5 cm (forehead & both ears should be exposed)
    • Equipment list for electronic media along with a carnet or bank guarantee for customs purposes
    • Letter of undertaking that the equipment will be re-exported at the end of the visit
    • A return air ticket

    Note:

    Journalists visiting to cover Sri Lanka for media outlets, printed media, newspapers, for news stories and interviews etc. may directly go to the Government Information Unit (GFU) to obtain their media accreditation. However, they can also visit/contact the Public Communications Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for further assistance like clearance of media equipment, schedule interviews with VVIPs etc. and courtesy calls.

    Filming/making documentaries

    • Please note that journalist/media personnel who intend visiting Sri Lanka for filming/making documentaries cannot apply under the aforementioned category. For guidelines for visa applicants for such pursuits please visit. (www.mea.gov.lk/index.php/en/media/guidlines-for-foreign-media)
    • Such parties should make representations through their local hosts/sponsors in Sri Lanka to the National Film Corporation (NFC) of Sri Lanka for a Clearance and should also sign an agreement (NFC Agreement) additionally. They are requested to submit the completed NFC Agreement, the synopsis of the documentary/feature film, Itinerary of the film crew in Sri Lanka, CVs   of the crew, names and passport details of the film crew visiting Sri Lanka, filming locations, the list of equipment and visa applications along with a request to the NFC through local sponsors.
    • If filming of cultural/religious sites is to be undertaken an agreement may be required to be signed with the Central Cultural Fund and prior clearance from authorities (as appropriate) may also be necessary. For further details please visit. (www.ccf.lk/pdf/Filming%20Instructions%203.pdf)

    • Filming in wild life protection areas require prior approval from the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Duly completed “Application for filming in wildlife protected areas (http://www.dwc.gov.lk/index.php/en/services/filming-permits)”, must be submitted by the applicant to along with the visa application. The Department of Wildlife Conservation requires at least two weeks to process the relevant documents before the scheduled commencement of filming.  Please note that Elephant Transit Homes and Holding Grounds are considered as separate wildlife reserves. Commercial Films and Tele Dramas are not allowed in wildlife protected areas. Charges for filming in wild life protection areas will vary depending on the length and time of the day and will be decided by the Director General/wild Life Conservation.

    Clearance of Equipment:

    • The Department of Customs strictly enforces regulations pertaining to the clearance of equipment carried by media personnel. Accordingly, visiting media personnel should possess a temporary import document known as ‘Carnet’ for any equipment carried by them, for customs clearance. In the absence of a ‘Carnet’, a bank guarantee should be submitted to the value of the items. If the visit is sponsored by any state institution, a guarantee letter from the relevant institution ensuring the re-export of the equipment is required.
    • The list of equipment carried by media personnel should be sent to the Public Communications Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the High Commission/ Consulate in advance, to facilitate clearance at the Customs at the airport. The list should be accompanied by a letter of undertaking from the relevant media organization that the equipment would be carried out of the country upon the departure of the media personnel.
    • Visa extensions for all journalists/media personnel are handled by the Visa & Border Control Division of the Department of Immigration & Emigration of Sri Lanka at “Suhurupaya”, Sri Subhuthipura, Baththaramulla.

  • ENTRY VISA FOR THE PURPOSE OF ARRANGING OF RESIDENCE VISA

    To obtain a residence visa, the applicant must enter Sri Lanka with an Entry Visa issued by a Sri Lankan diplomatic mission abroad.

    All applicants who do not qualify for the ETA category must hold a valid Entry Visa to enter Sri Lanka. Non-Sri Lankans who intend to reside in the island for extended periods for following purposes fall into this category.

    • Employment Category (Project professionals whose services are required for state approved projects/ expatriates employed in projects under Board of Investment (BOI) of Sri Lanka and their dependents/Bank employees & their dependents/Volunteers/Personnel attached to Non-Governmental Organizations/Personnel employed in projects, institutions or organizations under Diplomatic Missions in Sri Lanka/Personnel employed in private companies and their dependents)
    • Investor Category (Investors & those who intend to engage in business activities)
    • Religious Category (Members of the Clergy)
    • Students (Students in universities, government approved Educational or Other Institutions)
    • Registered Indians covered by the 1954 Indo-Lanka Agreement.
    • Ex- Sri Lankans and their dependents
    • Non-Sri Lankan family members of a Sri Lankan (spouse/children)
    • Diplomatic and Official visa applicants

    All applications except Diplomatic & Official visa applications for Entry Visas should be submitted to the Department of Immigration and & Emigration of Sri Lanka through or by applicant’s local sponsors/hosts. (Diplomatic & Official visa applications should be submitted to this Embassy) Once the Entry visa approval notice is received by the applicant or his local sponsor, the applicant should request a visa from this Embassy with the following details.

    • A copy of the Entry visa approval received from the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka
    • Duly filled form B (Click here)
    • Three Colour photographs with light blue background in size 4.5 cm x 3.5 cm (forehead & both ears should be exposed)

    Note:

    • Those who enter the island with a valid Entry Visa should present themselves at the Visa & Border Control Division of the Department of Immigration & Emigration of Sri Lanka at “Suhurupaya”, Sri Subhuthipura Road, Baththramulla” to request visa extensions or to covert the Entry Visa into a residence visa category as indicated in the approval notice and before the expiry of the period specified therein.
    • The applicant must clearly state that he/she wishes to apply for a residence visa when applying for the Entry Visa and submit the necessary supporting documents along with the application.
    • Please note that a Tourist or Business ETA visa cannot be converted into a residence visa later under any circumstance.

    Entry Visas for Investor and expatriate workers in BOI approved companies

    • Visa procedure for Investor and expatriate workers in BOI approved companies is published in “htttp://www.investsrilanka.com”. Accordingly, such applicants are strictly advised to follow the guidelines therein when submitting their visa applications.

    Entry Visas for workers in pharmaceutical companies

    • Employees intending to work in pharmaceutical companies should submit their visa applications to this Embassy instead of submitting directly to the Department of Immigration & Emigration. Such applications will be forwarded to the Director International Health of Sri Lanka through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for perusal. Visa applications under this category must accompany “Annexure B” (Click here) and all relevant documents which may require.
