Rio de Janeiro is the second largest regional economy in Brazil with a GDP of US$ 285 billion which accounts for 11.6% of the national GDP. The state of Rio de Janeiro is the third most populous state in Brazil with a population of 16.5 million. The economy of Rio de Janeiro has outstanding industrial and services sectors whose contribution to its GDP account for 23% and 72% respectively.
With a view of enhancing trade, investment and tourism relations, the Embassy organized a series of promotional activities in Rio de Janeiro from 18-20 July 2017.
At a meeting held with a group of key officials led by Mr. Luiz Carlos de Carvalho, General Manager of the undersecretariat for International relations of the State Government of Rio de Janeiro, General Jagath Jayasuriya, Ambassador for Sri Lanka in Brazil explained in detail the opportunities that exist in the fields of trade and investment. “We know that Rio is one of the very popular destinations for tourists from around the world. Most of the leading Brazilian and international tour operators are based here. I invite all of you to consider Sri Lanka as the next destination for your clients” said Ambassador Jayasuriya. The meeting was also attended by few leading entrepreneurs representing banking and investment sectors.
The main product promotional meeting was held at the Honorary Consulate of Sri Lanka in Rio de Janeiro. Mr. Premathilake Jayakody, Commercial Counsellor of the Embassy made an exclusive presentation explaining the Advantages when importing from Sri Lanka. He highlighted the fact that Rio de Janeiro’s high income consumer base with per capita income of over US$ 17,326 would be an attractive destination for high quality Sri Lankan products such as tea, spices, specialty food, apparel, coconut products, porcelain & ceramic ware. The exclusive display of sample products at the meeting venue was an ideal opportunity for businessmen to evaluate high quality Sri Lankan products.
A tea tasting programme was also organized on the sideline of the main product promotional meeting at the honorary consulate. In addition to leading businessmen, members of ‘Forum Integador do Bem Estar-Fibe’ which is a leading welfare Forum also joined to taste Ceylon Tea.
Rio is one of the premier tourist destinations in the world. The city's vibrant culture and many museums, historical sites, and physical features, especially the beautiful beaches attract large crowds of visitors. Many international and local inbound and outbound tour companies and travel agents are based in Rio de Janeiro. In order to enhance relations in tourism sector, a Meeting was held at the Sindicate of Tourism Agencies of Rio de Janeiro (SINDETUR-RJ) which was attended by leading tour operators based in Rio de Janeiro.
